A Tradition of Trust in Funeral Service Since 1907

We have served the families of Newnan and Coweta County for over 100 years with dedication, commitment, and respect. We pledge to serve you and your family in the same time-honored way. After all, we’ve been caring for you and your neighbors for over a century.

  • 1907
    • Mr. J.U. McKoon, a merchant, opened a “funeral parlor” in Luthersville, in Meriwether County, Georgia.
    • He began to offer the new service of embalming — a practice that gained popularity in the Civil War - which was desirable because it allowed more time for family members to travel to the funeral.
    • Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest US President in history, taking office after the assassination of William McKinley.
  • 1918
    • Mr. McKoon moved his business to Newnan, and located in a building on East Broad Street near Perry Street.
    • Daylight Savings Time was instituted.
    • The US Army fought historic battles of WWI in France, including Belleau Wood and the Argonne Forest.
  • 1920
    • The State of Georgia granted Mr. McKoon an official license to provide funeral and embalming services.
    • The firm moved to larger quarters on South Court Square. Today, the space is occupied by Globe Communications.
    • With the state of Tennessee ratifying the 36th Amendment, women were granted the right to vote.
  • 1937
    • Mr. McKoon moved his expanding business to the former Cuttino home on Jackson Street, to serve the community more completely.
    • The Golden Gate Bridge was dedicated in San Francisco.
  • 1958
    • Mr. J.U. McKoon passes away. The family business is passed to the second generation. His son Robert Betts McKoon inherits the business.
    • The U.S. launches its first satellite, Explorer I.
    • Elvis Presley is inducted into the U.S. Army.
  • 1966
    • McKoon Funeral Home discontinues ambulance services and focuses solely on the funeral home.
    • All U.S. cigarette packs have to carry "Caution Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health"
    • Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" airs for 1st time on CBS
  • 1968
    • The McKoon Funeral Home building was expanded to include two new staterooms and a dedicated chapel, creating the first full service funeral home in Coweta County.
    • Martin Luther King, Jr. civil rights leader, is slain in Memphis
    • 60 Minutes airs on CBS, beginning its reign as the longest-running prime-time newsmagazine.
  • 1986
    • Robert McKoon sells the funeral home; ownership is transferred into the capable hands of Terry Daviston.
    • Microsoft® Corporation first releases its Windows® operating system.
    • Hands Across America: At least 5,000,000 people form a human chain from New York City to Long Beach California, to raise money to fight hunger and homelessness (May 25).
  • 1988
    • Robert McKoon retires from McKoon Funeral Home
    • CDs outsell vinyl records for the first time.
    • US and Canada reach free trade agreement (Jan. 2).
  • 1995
    • The old “box house” at McKoon Funeral Home was torn down to make way for additional parking
    • Russian space station Mir greets first Americans (March 14). US shuttle docks with station (June 27).
    • Pope John Paul II visits US on whirlwind tour
  • 1998
    • John Daviston graduates from Auburn University and enrolls at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service marking the second generation of Daviston family involvement.
    • An estimated 76 million viewers watch the last episode of Seinfeld.
    • Legendary crooner Frank Sinatra dies of a heart attack at age 82.
  • 2000
    • McKoon adds an on-site crematory to accommodate the wishes of families wanting cremation.
    • Y2K passes without serious, widespread computer failures, despite fears to the contrary.
    • The comic strip "Peanuts" makes its final appearance in newspapers.
    • Mr. Robert B. McKoon passes away September 30, 2000.
  • 2007
    • McKoon Funeral Home celebrates 100 years of continuous service.
